Ignoring the stop a sign of the past

The City of Cape Town’s Road Infrastructure Management Department recently installed a traffic signal at the intersection of Japhta K Masemola Road and Bonga Drive in Khayelitsha. The project is in response to a community request to enhance road safety and improve traffic flow for motorists at this intersection.
‘This project is ‘Making progress possible. Together’ in action. The residents identified a need in their community and brought it to our attention and as a caring, responsive government that prioritises the safety of its residents, we listened. This is amazing and we would like to see residents taking ownership of their communities, across the city. Also, with the new signals, we are improving service delivery and safety of all of those using this intersection. A great advantage is that we have traffic cameras at this intersection to detect those who skip the red signal so that we can take action against reckless drivers,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The project entailed:
• Improved universal access such as dropped kerbs and tactile paving to improve access for those with special needs
• traffic cameras for detection of those skipping the red light
• pedestrian push buttons
‘Another huge advantage of the signals is that it will improve the traffic flow at the intersection which means less time spent on the road for commuters. The dropped kerbs and tactile paving will assist those pedestrians with special needs. I want to encourage all to please comply with the new traffic signal and to enjoy the benefits of the upgrades at this intersection.
‘Traffic signals ensure and improve traffic flow in a controlled manner, allowing vehicles and pedestrians to use the road network in a safe and orderly manner. Unfortunately, some motorists make a habit of disregarding traffic signals. This places everyone’s safety at risk. Thus, I appeal to all road users to please be mindful that their actions can have serious repercussions not only for them, but for those around them as well,’ said Councillor Quintas.
